January 2011 North Dorset Primary Schools League
After three of the five scheduled rounds, St Andrew's, Fontmell Magna lead the new North Dorset Primary Schools Chess League with three wins, with Abbey Primary close behind with two wins out of two. Trent Young's are third, with Semley Primary and Shaftesbury Primary equal fourth. St Andrew's and Abbey are due to play in the last round in early March, when the title will be decided. While some of the matches have been a little one-sided, all those taking part seemed to have enjoyed the experience, and the hope is that the League will continue next year, hopefully with more schools participating.

Results: Round 1 - St Andrew's 6-0 v Shaftesbury Primary; Abbey 4-2 v Semley. Round 2 - Trent Young's 0-6 v St Andrew's; Shaftesbury 0-6 v Abbey. Round 3 - Shaftesbury 1-5 v Trent Young's; St Andrew's 6-0 v Semley

Following the success of last year's Fun Day Chess Tournament , the Abbey Primary School at Shaftesbury held its 2010 tournament on Saturday, 11th September. The tournament this year was open to any children in years 2 to 9 inclusive and welcomed those who were new to chess or old hands!
Some schools were represented for the first time (Sticklands, Sandroyd, Chilmark & Fonthill and Shaftesbury Primary), and it was good to see someone from "down south" (Annabel Goodwin)!

9th July 2010 Mayor of Bournemouth Schools Competition Finals
The finals of the 2nd annual Mayor of Bournemouth Schools competition were held on Friday 9th July at the Highcliff Marriott Hotel, St Michaels Road, West Cliff, Bournemouth.

The competing schools were:
Senior section
Portchester School
Bournemouth School
Junior section
St. Mark's Church of England Aided Primary School
Bethany Church of England Junior School
Moordown St. John's Church of England Primary School (2 teams)

The results were as follows:
Senior section
Round 1 Bournemouth School 1½-2½ Portchester School
Round 2 Portchester School 3-1 Bournemouth School
Portchester, the defending champions, won both matches to retain the trophy. Patrick Hurley who played and won both matches on top board for Portchester was 1 of only 2 players remaining from last year and interestingly will be joining BSG Boys in the new year.
Junior section
Round 1 St. John's School B ½-3½ St. Mark's School
Round 1 Bethany School 1½-2½ St. John's School A
Round 2 St. John's School A 2-2 St. John's School B
Round 2 St. Mark's School 2-2 Bethany School
Round 3 St. John's School A 1½-2½ St. Mark's School
Round 3 Bethany School 3-1 St. John's School B
The matches were all hard fought and very close and going into the final round St. Mark's and St John's A were level with 1 win and a draw each. They were playing each other so all depended on this match. The games were again close and top board was very even with both players threatening to checkmate each other. It fell to George Wright of St. Mark's to inflict the fatal mate and with 2 other team mates winning this left St. Mark's as winners with Bethany 2nd and St. John's A in 3rd.

The Mayor of Bournemouth Barry Goldbart was attending and was pleased to see the enthusiasm of all the boys and girls playing (and the teachers and parents watching).

The presentation of the Sir George Meyrick trophies was made by The Mayor of Bournemouth together with Sir George Meyrick to Portchester with the Senior trophy and St Mark's for the Junior trophy.

Thanks were given to the organisation by the Bournemouth & District Chess League notably Ian Clark, Pete Donaldson and Chris Ambrose. Also to Stephen Chappell (Mayor in the event's inaugural year) for his enthusiastic support and to the Highcliff Marriot Hotel for providing the room for the event.
